Although we touched on this briefly last week, we thought it would be good to go into more details about why your kids should be eating healthier.
Good Nutrition To Grow Healthy and Strong
Children are still developing, so it is very important that they get proper nutrition in order to be healthy. What they eat will have an impact on how they grow. What they eat now matters, eventually bad eating habits will catch up to them. As adults, we are the ones that should be leading by example and demonstrating to our kids good eating habits. Kids will mimic what they see. How you are living your life does impact greatly how they will live theirs.
What To Eat For Proper Nutrition
Children have smaller stomaches, so it is necessary for them to eat smaller meals, with extra snacks. Choosing the right snacks is important. Using the Canada Food Guide, here are some suggestions including serving size. You can also split serving sizes up…if they cannot finish a whole serving then serve it with lunch and then for a snack.
Vegetables and Fruit
- 125 mL (½ cup) fresh, frozen or canned ?vegetable or fruit or 100% juice
- 250 mL (1 cup) leafy raw vegetables or?salad
- 1 piece of fruit
- 1 slice (35 g) bread or ½ bagel (45 g)
- ½ pita (35 g) or ½ tortilla (35 g)
- 125 mL (½ cup) cooked rice, pasta, or couscous
- 30 g cold cereal or 175 mL (¾ cup) hot cereal
Milk and Alternatives
- 250 mL (1 cup) milk or fortified soy beverage
- 175 g (¾ cup) yogurt
- 50 g (1 ½ oz.) cheese
Meat and Alternatives
- 75 g (2 ½ oz.)/125 mL (½ cup) cooked fish, shellfish, poultry or lean meat
- 175 mL (¾ cup) cooked beans
- 2 eggs
- 30 mL (2 Tbsp) peanut butter
Keeping healthy options available to our children allows them to feel a little bit in control when they get to choose their snacks. Whenever possible keep the “packaged” foods to a very minimal. Processed foods have a number of negative health concerns and should really be avoided. Fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, homemade baked goods are all very appealing to young kids.
Making Nutrition Fun
Making memories with your children by including them in some of your baking days will also foster in them an enjoyment for cooking or baking. Kids love to spend quality time with their parents and/or grandparents, and this is a great way to ensure they eat healthy, but also to establish some healthy life long habits in them, with the bonus of a memorable day for everyone.
Chiropractic Care and Nutrition, What’s The Connection?
Did you know that all of us can experience digestive issues that can be corrected through chiropractic care? Our nervous system is designed to work in conjunction with the various parts of our bodies. When we experience misalignments in our spine it can affect our nervous systems and cause miscommunication to occur to other parts of the body. This miscommunication may contribute to a variety of health concerns including how our digestive system operates. When we have healthy spines, the rest of our body is able to perform optimally.
Are you concerned about food allergies/sensitivities? At Sante Chiropractic and Wellness Centre we offer a food allergy test that takes guessing out of the picture and allows you to eliminate foods that can be causing problems for yourself and/or your child.
If you have any comments or questions we’d love to hear from you.
