What’s So Bad About Poor Posture?
As it turns out – quite a bit! Bad posture follows you around like a shadow, affecting every movement that you make. When your body is out of alignment, there is more strain on your spine and your body in general. Poor posture causes excess wear and tear on your spine and joints, which in turn can result in chronic neck, back and shoulder pain. Poor posture can also contribute to:
• Poor Circulation
• Chronic Fatigue
• Reduced Range of Motion
And, don’t forget that your spine protects your nervous system, which controls every cell, tissue and organ in your body. Maintaining good posture allows you to maintain the natural curvature of your spine and minimizes the stress and strain placed on your spine and joints over time. So what exactly is good posture? Good standing posture means standing in a neutral position with:
Your head straight. Ears stacked over shoulders and eyes on the horizon.
Hips stacked over ankles with weight evenly distributed between both feet.
Feet parallel and hip width apart (approx. 8 – 12 inches).
Arms relaxed by the sides of your body, not pinned back or rounded forward.

5 Easy Ways to Tune Up Your Posture
The good news is there are simple things you can do to help improve your posture:
1. Look for ways to move more and sit less during the day. Set a timer at your desk and stand up and move around every 20 minutes or so. The more you move the better your health will be.
2. When watching TV, stand up and move around during the commercials. You could even add in some gentle stretches or even try a foam roller to help reduce tension in your body.
3. Incorporate some chest opening stretches into your daily routine. Add some positive affirmations to give you that extra little boost of energy.
4. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight. Include exercises to strengthen your upper back muscles and your core. This will make it easier to maintain good posture.
5. Check in with your posture regularly. Notice the posture that you naturally settle into. Is it ideal or could it use some tweaking? Try to make small adjustments. Over time these will make a huge difference!
