Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Do you find yourself awake at night with radiating pain in your wrist?
Are the muscles in your hand and fingers weak?
Do you experience numbness, tingling and/or pain throughout your hands and fingers?
This could be the beginning signs of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common issues affecting the hand, and it occurs when the median nerve in the wrist becomes compressed. CTS is a common condition that occurs in 2.7% of the general population. It is more common in women than men, and the average age of people with CTS is 40–50 years. What Causes Carpal Tunnel?
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) causes can come from many different things. Your genetic makeup can make you more susceptible, trauma can trigger it, and repetitive movements, chronic inflammation, joint disorders or even your work situation can cause it to be brought on. Work situations can often be the culprit of repetitive movements and awkward positions for your wrist and hand to be in; carrying heavy plates in a serving job, having your hand elevated onto a mouse at your desk job all day or working day in and day out with power tools and machines that send constant vibrations to your hands and wrists can all be contributors to CTS, or put you more at risk in the future.
Additional underlying factors can be behind your carpal tunnel pain as well, such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, and high blood pressure, just to name a few. Your carpal tunnel is trying to send you signals through the pain it is causing you. It could be trying to warn you that there is more going on in your body, or asking you to change your workspace or current lifestyle and consult with a chiropractor.
Why You Shouldn’t Ignore CTS
Unfortunately, carpal tunnel syndrome and its associative pain is not the kind of injury that goes away on its own. Small hand weights simply won’t be the answer to this problem! Left untreated, you can find yourself unable to complete your obligations at work, searching for some kind of prescription or opioid medication to give you some relief. At worst, ignored CTS can cause severe nerve damage and worsening symptoms, requiring surgery years down the line.
Imagine not having wrist pain dictate what activities you can participate in. Think about the freedom of not having to worry about your next refill on your prescription medications. You can treat your carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms early on and help yourself avoid all of the medications, doctor visits, damage to your nerves, and potential surgeries. Chiropractors are experts at assessing the musculoskeletal system and treating the root cause of pain, inflammation, and misalignments.
