Lower Back Pain

Is lower back pain keeping you from doing the things you need or want to do?

Do you feel like you need a few steps before you “unfold” when you get up from your chair?

Have you had lower back pain before but can’t seem to shake it this time around?

You are not alone in suffering! Research shows, “In a six-month period, 5 in 10 Canadians suffered from low back pain. Up to 85% of working people can expect to experience lower back pain during their lifetime. In Canada, the low back pain-related estimate of medical costs ranges between 6 and 12 billion dollars annually.” (Canadian Chiropractic Association. May 9, 2018).  https://www.chiropractic.ca/blog/canadas-low-back-pain-epidemic/

With so many of us having to sit to get to work, sit at work, sit at lunch, sit back in traffic at night and then sit to watch TV at night as they are too tired from their day to do anything else, it is no wonder low backache prevalence has increased so much in recent years. It has been said that “sitting is the new smoking”. It is harder and harder for people to stay active and move in our busy, computer-centric world.

What’s so bad about sitting, you may wonder? While in a seated position, the pressure in the lower back is increased by about 1.7 times your body weight.

This is when the person is sitting with proper posture! If they are even slightly slouching or not engaging their core correctly that pressure increases further, putting unnecessary pressure on the spinal joints and discs causing pain and putting you at high risk of joint disease (DJD) or osteoarthritis and to disc degeneration disease (DDD). Proper body mechanics can prevent low back pain from emerging and can help reduce the likelihood of osteoarthritis and DDD to occur—after all, we only have one spine and we better take care of it as there is no going back. There is no button to “undo” the degeneration from long term abnormal body mechanics.

Your Spine and Nervous System

Your spine is made up of 24 vertebrates that all need to move together to allow you to move efficiently and be pain-free. Your spine also covers your nervous system which controls every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. Your spine not only keeps you mobile but is also key for optimal brain-body communication for overall health.

When the spine is out of alignment it will cause undue stress along the spine, impacting the joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. So it is not always as simple as stretching or exercising it out of misalignment. The body is complex and this is why chiropractors are experts at finding where the issues in your spine are and correcting these misalignments with safe and effective chiropractic adjustments.

The Importance of a Properly Aligned Spine

“I thought it would go away” is a phrase chiropractors hear all the time. Sometimes the pain can go away only to come back later even worse if the structural alterations have not been addressed. Our bodies are smart and are telling us through pain signals that something is wrong and we need to do something about it. It’s like the engine light on our cars lighting up to tell us to address the issue now if we don’t want to be standing on the side of the road later on.

A properly aligned spine can not only keep you pain-free but will also keep you mobile, energized and optimally functioning as it will also optimize your brain-body communication. Millions of patients have used chiropractic care since the start of the profession in 1895.
