Neck Pain
Do you often experience neck pain or stiffness?
Do you feel like your shoulders are on fire for most of the day?
Does turning your head side to side cause you pain?
You are not alone in your suffering. In fact, it is said that neck pain is the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide. With a lifetime prevalence of 71%, most adults can expect to experience neck pain at some point during their lifetime. The prevalence of neck pain peaks in middle age and is more common in women. What Causes Neck Pain?
Many people are now at a desk all day, going full speed ahead on their computer or doing repetitive tasks that are placing unwanted stress on their neck and shoulders. Add to this our fast-paced go-go life with a long list of things to accomplish and a deadline to meet and it’s no wonder more and more people are suffering from neck pain. This often starts as the occasional episode that you brush off and assume you must have “slept funny”, quickly leading to these occurrences being more the norm than the exception.
The bones of the spine work hard to protect our nervous system and need to be kept in proper alignment for us to be pain-free. When spinal vertebrae become misaligned from things like past slips, falls, sedentary lifestyles, repetitive movements or chronic stress, it can impact our overall health and well-being. Pain is there to tell us something is wrong. Think of it as the warning engine light on your car; you would not just place duck tape over it to no longer see it and ignore the problem as this may very well lead you to be on the side of the highway calling CAA for help. Referred neck pain can be felt on top of the shoulders, between the shoulder blades, along the jaw, in the front of the chest and as a headache.
How to Get Lasting Relief
Chronic neck pain can easily develop into other associated symptoms like pain in the shoulders, between the shoulder blades, along the jaw, in the front of the chest and as a headache. It can also lead to Joint Degeneration Disease (JDD) and Disc Degeneration Disease (DDD) which are not actually “diseases” but more degeneration caused by abnormal spinal mechanics.
Have you purchased pillows after pillows trying to get comfortable at night? Have you bought at-home self-massage units or begged your partner to rub your shoulders to get any kind of relief, often to no avail? Symptoms may disappear for a short while just to come back with a vengeance later. In order to get some lasting relief one has to go to the source of the problem and address the cause of neck pain by restoring the mobility of the cervical spine. Each of the 7 cervical vertebrae needs to move correctly over one another so the ligaments, tendons, and muscles don’t have extra strains put on them. Though stretching is an important part of general fitness, you can’t stretch yourself out of improper spinal alignment.
What if instead of your body dictating what events you can participate in, it helped facilitate you living out your best life? Imagine how freeing it would feel to be able to make your bed, help your kid with their school project, say yes to extra hours at work or enjoy a night out without having to be distracted or prevented by the pain in your neck.
