Every year on September 18, we celebrate a pretty amazing milestone, the birthday of chiropractic care! What started as one man’s observation over a century ago has grown into a trusted, evidence-based profession that helps millions of people move, feel, and function better.
So how did it all begin? Let’s take a fun look back at the history of chiropractic, evolution, and the impact of chiropractic care—from its fascinating origin story to its important place in today’s healthcare system.
The Story Begins in 1895: A Pop Heard Around the World
It all started in Davenport, Iowa, with a man named Daniel David Palmer, a curious mind, a magnetic healer, and someone deeply fascinated by the body’s ability to heal itself.
One day, while reorganizing his office, Palmer called over the building’s janitor, Harvey Lillard, to help move some furniture. But Lillard didn’t respond. Turns out, he had been deaf for 17 years after injuring his upper back.
Palmer examined Lillard’s spine and noticed something unusual: a misaligned vertebra. With permission, Palmer delivered a firm, focused thrust to the spot. And just like that, Harvey Lillard’s hearing improved. He reportedly said, “I can hear the wagons in the street!”
That moment was the spark. Palmer had stumbled onto something powerful: the spine’s connection to the nervous system and the body’s healing potential¹.
From Breakthrough to Profession: Chiropractic is Born
Palmer called his new healing method chiropractic, from the Greek words cheir (hand) and praktos (done by). In 1897, he opened the first chiropractic school, and soon, his son B.J. Palmer helped expand it into a movement.
Despite early success with patients, chiropractors faced serious resistance. Still, they persevered and in 1913, Kansas became the first state to legally recognize chiropractic care¹.
Fighting for Recognition and Earning a Place in Mainstream Care
In the 1960s and 70s, chiropractic care was still working to gain broader acceptance within the healthcare system. During this time, some professional organizations questioned its legitimacy, limiting collaboration and access to resources like hospital privileges and insurance coverage.
In response, four dedicated chiropractors, Chester Wilk, Michael Pedigo, Patricia Arthur, and James Bryden, filed a legal case to ensure fair treatment and professional recognition for their field. After years of legal proceedings, the courts ruled in favour of the chiropractors, helping to remove barriers and promote more integrated care across professions².
This milestone marked a turning point, allowing chiropractic to take its place alongside other healthcare disciplines—in hospitals, insurance networks, and even within military and veterans’ healthcare systems, offering patients more options for safe, natural care.
Chiropractic Today: More Than Just “Back Cracking”
Today, chiropractic is licensed, science-based, and recognized around the world. It’s not just about relieving back pain; it’s about supporting the entire nervous system so the body can work at its best.
Chiropractors are trained in:
- Anatomy, neurology, and radiology
- Nutrition and biomechanics
- Evidence-based diagnosis and treatment³
And yes, they still use their hands but with years of training behind every adjustment. Whether it’s helping with neck pain, headaches, joint issues, or posture, chiropractic care is all about natural healing and restoring function.
What Makes Chiropractic Unique?
Here’s what sets chiropractic apart:
- Spine Focus: Your spine protects your spinal cord, which connects your brain to the rest of your body. Spinal misalignments can disrupt that connection.
- Non-Invasive Care: No drugs. No surgery. Just realignment, rehabilitation, and lifestyle support.
- Whole-Person Wellness: Chiropractors care about more than symptoms—they focus on movement, stress, sleep, and long-term vitality.
- Patient Empowerment: Chiropractic care encourages you to take an active role in your health, with guidance and support tailored to your unique needs and goals.
Clearing Up Common Misconceptions About Chiropractic Care
As chiropractic continues to grow in popularity, it’s natural for questions and misconceptions to arise. Here’s a closer look at some of the most common myths and the facts that help clarify them:
- “Chiropractors aren’t real doctors.”
Chiropractors earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, which involves over 4,000 hours of academic and clinical training³. - “Chiropractic is only for back pain.”
While many people seek chiropractic care for back pain, it can also help manage conditions such as neck pain, tension headaches, sciatica, and posture-related issues⁴. - “Adjustments are addictive.”
Chiropractic adjustments are not physically addictive. Some individuals choose to continue care because they notice improvements in how they feel and function but ongoing care is always a personal decision. - “There’s no scientific support.”
A growing body of research supports chiropractic care, particularly for spine-related disorders⁵. - “Once you start, you have to keep going.”
Chiropractic care plans are personalized and flexible. Some people choose periodic visits for wellness and maintenance, much like they would for dental checkups or physical therapy but there is no obligation to continue beyond your goals.
So Why Celebrate?
Because chiropractic has come a long way from a bold experiment in a dusty office in Iowa to a global profession grounded in science and driven by a passion for natural, whole-body healing.
This September 18, we celebrate the incredible legacy of chiropractic care and all the amazing lives it’s helped along the way.
