Put Down That Antacid and Book an Appointment with Your Chiropractor

Almost everyone has experienced heartburn at some point in their life.

You eat a meal and a few minutes later you start feeling a painful burning just below your breastbone. A few minutes later the pain rises in your chest from your stomach and spreads to your neck or throat. Your first instinct; reach for an antacid. But what if I told you that you could find heartburn relief naturally, without drugs or surgery.

Heartburn doesn’t have to do with the heart at all. To put it simply, heartburn is an irritation of the esophagus that is caused by stomach acid. With gravity’s help, a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) keeps stomach acid in the stomach. The LES is located where the esophagus meets the stomach. The LES opens to allow food into the stomach and to permit belching; after these functions are done it closes again. But if the LES opens too often or does not close tight enough, stomach acid can reflux into the esophagus and cause the burning sensation known as heartburn.

What Causes Heartburn?

There are plenty of things that can cause heartburn including:

  • Too much food in the stomach (overeating)
  • Too much pressure on the stomach (this can be caused from obesity, pregnancy, or constipation)
  • Certain foods like tomatoes, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, caffeinated products, and peppermint
  • Meals high in fats and oils (animal or vegetable)
  • Some medications
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress
  • Smoking

How Can Chiropractic Help Heartburn?

Heartburn is a symptom: the body’s way of telling us something is wrong. Heartburn indicates a problem within the digestive system. And, it begins with stress! If stress attacks the stomach, tiny holes can develop. Upon eating, acid seeps through the holes; heartburn results. WOW!

How can heartburn be helped by chiropractic? The answer lies within the spine. The stomach is controlled by nerves. Nerves come from the spine! If the spine is stressed, the vertebrae slip out of alignment… the result? The nerves don’t work too well. The stomach can weaken and heartburn can begin. It’s called a subluxation, and you CANNOT feel it! You may be trying every other remedy, not realizing that a subluxation is the problem! Subluxations are removed by chiropractors.
